Ein Bürostuhl und ein Steinway & Sons Flügel schmückten am 1. Oktober die Bühne des Prinzregententheaters. Hagen Rether in hellem Anzug setzt sich lässig an sein Instrument. Dann fragt er, leise, ob das Publikum es auch höre – diese Stille. „Die Stille nach der Wahl, großartig“, meint er, „diese Phase, diese zwei Wochen, da scheint alles möglich. Wie bei der Papstwahl. Und dann steigt doch wieder Rauch auf.“

Seit 2003 heißt Rethers Programm schon „Liebe“, das er immer variiert. Nun war die erste von vier fantastischen Stunden der aktuellen Wahl gewidmet. Polit-Kabarett auf höchsten Niveau, intelligent, witzig, tiefgründig und – egal wie charmant er dabei lächelt oder seinen Flügel mit Glasreiniger putzt – bitterböse! Die FDP ist die Bauchrednerpuppe der Konzerne, die SPD ein Tranquilizer, der noch immer nicht ganz wirke, Schäuble ein reaktionärer Paranoiker mit Sicherheitswahn, der Bin Laden als Antichristen funktionalisiert.

Rether ist einer, der sich nichts verbietet, der dort nachbohrt, wo andere sich abwenden, so dass seine Texte manchmal schmerzen. Wenn er etwa Grönemeyers Männer-Song umdichtet: „Frauen, außen weich und innen ganz hart, schon als Kind auf Opfer geeicht.“ Nein, ein Zyniker ist er nicht, die Gesellschaft ist zynisch. Das erklärt Rether anhand Fakten, die jeden treffen, der nicht Vegetarier ist. Auch Religion kommt grundsätzlich nicht gut davon, sie sei „ein feuchter Männertraum“, der Dalai Lama „der Peter Lustig für enttäuschte Christen“ und die Botschaft des Papamobils sehr fragwürdig. „Ist das nicht ein Offenbarungseid einer Religion, wenn der Vati im Tresor sitzt?“

Doch er ist stets in der Lage, ein Lächeln entstehen zu lassen, nicht eines, das auf den Lippen zerbricht, sondern eines, das Hoffnung weckt. Denn bei allem intellektuellen Weltschmerz, bei aller Frustration angesichts des salonfähigen Zynismus in unserer Gesellschaft, ist er ein unverbesserlicher Optimist, so scheint es, der glaubt, es könne besser werden, wenn nur jeder einmal nachdenkt. Dafür ist er hier, den Anstoß zu geben.

Gegen halb elf gibt es eine ausschließlich musikalische Einlage. Rether brilliert mal in lässiger Glenn-Gould-Haltung, mal weit zurückgelehnt in seinem Bürostuhl improvisierend – von Beethoven über jazzige Klänge zu „Schlaf Kindlein, schlaf“. Doch ist er da noch lange nicht fertig. Fein säuberlich zerlegt er die Verlogenheit der „Turbokapitalisten von nebenan“, Jauch und Kerner, ihre Betroffenheitsszenarien und ihre fragwürdigen Werbekampagnen.

Hagen Rether verkörpert etwas, das selten ist: Eine Haltung. Er weicht nie aus, sondern bezieht Stellung, auch wenn die unbequem ist. Gegen Mitternacht gab’s dafür Standing Ovation und Rether, der große Schlanke mit dem Pferdeschwanz, verließ still und bescheiden die Bühne. Am 11. Januar 2010 ist er wieder in München, dann im Deutschen Theater.

So heißt es in einem dem Propheten Muhammad zugeschriebenen Hadith:

„Starre nicht auf bartlose Knaben, denn sie haben Augen, die verführerischer sind als die Jungfrauen [huris].“

Ähnlich äußert sich der im Jahr 1200 n. u. Z. verstorbene hanbalitische Rechtsgelehrte Ibn al-Gauzi:

„Derjenige, der behauptet, dass er keine Begierde empfindet [wenn er schöne Knaben erblickt], ist ein Lügner, und wenn wir ihm glauben könnten, wäre er ein Tier, nicht ein menschliches Wesen.“

Dies schlägt sich auch in den Paradiesbeschreibungen des Koran nieder, wo nicht nur „großäugige Jungfrauen“, sondern auch Jünglinge, „gleich verborgenen Perlen“ (Sure 52, Vers 24), auf die (männlichen) Wiederauferstandenen warten und sie als Mundschenke bedienen:

„Die Runde machen bei ihnen unsterbliche Knaben mit Humpen und Kannen (von Wein) und einem Becher (voll) von Quellwasser.“ (Sure 56, Vers 17-18)

Die romantische Liebe (‘isq) zwischen Männern wird – unter der Voraussetzung, dass sie keusch ist – vom Islam vollständig akzeptiert. So schreibt der Universalgelehrte Ibn Hazm:

„Liebe wird von der Religion weder missbilligt, noch vom Gesetz verboten; denn jedes Herz ist in Gottes Hand.“

Gleichzeitig führt aber die Verwerfung von unkeuschen Handlungen zwischen Männern für den strenggläubigen Muslim zu einem inneren Glaubenskampf (dschihad) gegen sein eigenes Selbst (nafs). Einem bekannten Hadith zufolge gilt derjenige, der in diesem Kampf obsiegt, als „Liebesmärtyrer“:

„Wer liebt und keusch bleibt und sein Geheimnis verbirgt und stirbt, stirbt als ein Märtyrer.“

Eine etwas andere Haltung nimmt die sufische Tradition ein. In ihr spielt die leidenschaftliche Zuneigung zwischen dem „Liebenden“ und dem „Geliebten“ eine konstitutive Bedeutung für die mystische Annäherung an Gott. Dies ist aber auf keinen Fall körperlich, also zwischen zwei Menschen (Männern) zu sehen, sondern der Liebende ist ein Synonym für den Suchenden, also den Sufi, der Geliebte ist ein Synonym für Gott.

Another Hadith narrative reports Muhammad as having said, „No man should look at the private parts of another man, and no woman should look at the private parts of another woman, and no two men sleep [in bed] under one cover.“ [citation needed]

46. Chapter: The excellence of love for the sake of Allah and encouraging it, and a man who loves another informing him of that and what he says to him when he informs him

Allah Almighty says, „Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are fierce to the unbelievers, merciful to one another…“ (48:29) to the end of the sura,

and the Almighty says, „Those who were settled in the abode, and in belief, love those who have made hijra to them.“ (59:9)

375. Anas reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, „Anyone who possesses three attributes will experience the sweetness of belief: that he loves Allah and His Messenger more than anything else; that he loves someone for the sake of Allah alone; and that he hates the idea of reverting to disbelief as much as he would hate being thrown into a fire.“ [Agreed upon]

376. Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, „There are seven whom Allah will shade with His shade on the day when there is no shade but His shade: a just Imam, a youth who grows up worshipping Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, a man whose heart is attached to the mosque, two men who love each other for the sake of Allah, meeting and parting for that reason alone, a man who refuses the advances of a noble and beautiful woman, saying, ‘I fear Allah’, a man who gives sadaqa and conceals it so that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives, and a man who remembers Allah when he is alone and his eyes overflow with tears.“ [Agreed upon]

377. Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, „Allah Almighty will say on the Day of Rising, ‘Where are those who loved one another for the sake of My majesty? Today, on the day when there is no shade but My shade, I will shade them.’“ [Muslim]

378. Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, „By the one who has my soul in His hand, you will not enter the Garden until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I point out to you something which will make you love one another if you do it? Make the greeting widespread among you.“ [Muslim]

379. Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, „A man visited a brother of his in another village and Allah positioned an angel to wait for him on his way.“ He mentioned the hadith to his words, „Allah loves you just as you love him for His sake.“ [Muslim]

380. Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said about the Ansar, „Only a believer loves them and only a hypocrite hates them. Allah loves anyone who loves them and Allah hates anyone who hates them.“ [Agreed upon]

381. Mu’adh said, „I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, says, „Those who love one another for My majesty will have minbars of lights. The Prophets and martyrs will envy them.“‘“ [at-Tirmidhi]

382. Abu Idris al-Khawlani said, „I entered the mosque of Damascus and there was a young man with white teeth there with some other people. When they disagreed about something, they referred it to him and followed his opinion. I inquired about him and it was said, ‘That is Mu’adh ibn Jabal.’ The following day, I went early and I found that he had come earlier than me and I found him praying. I waited for him until he finished his prayer and then I approached him from the front. I greeted him and then said, ‘By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah.’ He said, ‘By Allah?’ I said, ‘By Allah.’ He said, ‘By Allah?’ I said, ‘By Allah.’ He took hold of the upper part of my cloak and pulled me to him. He said, ‘Rejoice! I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, „Allah Almighty says, ‘My love is mandatory for those who love one another in Me and sit together for My sake and who visit one another for My sake and who give generously to to one another for My sake.’“‘“ [Muwatta']

383. Abu Karima al-Miqdad ibn Ma’dikarib reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, „If a man loves his brother, he should tell him that he loves him.“ [Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi]

384. Mu’adh reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, took him by the hand and said, „O Mu’adh! By Allah, I love you.and I advise you not to fail to say after every prayer, ‘O Allah, help me to remember You and thank You and worship You well.“ [Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i]

385. Anas reported that a man was with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when a man passed by him and said, „O Messenger of Allah, I love this man.“ The Prophet said to him, „Have you informed him?“ He said, „No.“ He said, „Inform him,“ and he caught up with him and said, „I love you for the sake of Allah.“ He said, „The One for whom you love me has made me love you.“ [Abu Dawud]

The conditions of Bai’at set out by the Promised Messiah (as) impose upon us a great responsibility. He admonished:

“Let me make it absolutely clear that a mere verbal pledge has no value if it is not supported by a genuine and firm resolve to live up to it in every way. Therefore, whoever fully lives up to my teaching, he alone enters that house of mine with reference to which God Almighty has promised, “I shall Myself protect all those who are in this house.” (Essence of Islam Volume IV page 255. For the theme of this Ijtema, I decided upon Salaat and I would be remiss in my duty here if I did not touch upon this topic. The Promised Messiah(as) instructed:

“So all ye people, counted as members of my Community! In heaven you shall be counted members of my following only when in all truth you actually begin to advance on the paths of righteousness. Offer your five daily obligatory prayers with such concentration and awe of mind as though you were seeing God in front of you, with your physical eyes.” (Our Teachings, p.7)
